At Kumoship, we are committed to providing secure, reliable, and transparent shipping solutions for small and medium-sized businesses across Canada. As part of our service offering, we provide customers with the option to insure shipments sent via UPS. This insurance policy outlines the terms and conditions governing the coverage, limitations, and claims process associated with UPS shipping insurance purchased through Kumoship.
UPS shipping insurance, also referred to as declared value coverage, is designed to provide compensation in the event of loss or physical damage to a parcel while in UPS’s custody. Coverage applies from the time the package is tendered to UPS until final delivery to the recipient, provided that all applicable packaging, labeling, and documentation standards are met.
Customers may declare a value for their shipment during the booking process on the Kumoship platform. The declared value represents the maximum liability for which a claim can be made, subject to the exclusions and limitations outlined in this policy.
The maximum coverage available through Kumoship for a single UPS shipment is $70,000 CAD. The minimum declared value eligible for insurance coverage is $100 CAD. Unless insurance is explicitly selected and a declared value is entered at the time of booking, no coverage will be applied to the shipment.
The insurance fee is calculated at a rate of $2.50 CAD per $100 of declared value, with a minimum charge of $5.00 CAD per shipment. For example, a declared value of $300 would result in an insurance charge of $7.50, while a $1,000 declared value would incur a $25.00 charge. This insurance fee is added to the total shipping cost at the time of booking.
It is the responsibility of the shipper to ensure that the declared value accurately reflects the verifiable commercial value of the goods being shipped. Misrepresentation or overstatement of the value may result in denial of coverage or limitation of payout in the event of a claim. Supporting documentation, such as purchase invoices or receipts, may be required to validate the declared value during the claims process.
UPS shipping insurance does not provide coverage for all types of losses. The following categories of items and circumstances are excluded from insurance coverage:
For a comprehensive list of restricted items, customers are encouraged to review the official UPS Terms and Conditions, available at https://www.ups.com/ca/en/help-center/legal-terms-conditions.page.
In the event of damage, loss, or theft, customers must file a claim with KumoShip within a specific timeframe.
The claims process requires detailed documentation, including proof of damage and shipment records.
Claims will be reviewed and processed as quickly as possible, typically within 10 business days.
Kumoship will review the submission and file the claim with UPS on behalf of the customer. Most claims are resolved within ten (10) to fifteen (15) business days. Approved claims will result in reimbursement of the declared value (up to the insured amount) and may include a refund of the shipping charges if applicable. Reimbursements will be issued to the original payment method or applied as credit to the customer’s Kumoship account, based on the customer’s preference and the nature of the transaction.
Insurance must be purchased prior to shipment pickup. Coverage is not retroactive and cannot be applied to shipments that have already been tendered to UPS. Kumoship and UPS reserve the right to deny any claim that does not meet packaging standards, contains inaccurate information, or lacks proper supporting documentation.
This policy is subject to change without prior notice. Customers are encouraged to review the latest version of the UPS Shipping Insurance Policy on the Kumoship website prior to each shipment.
